Sophia is wonderful to work with! Since completing the copy for our new website, considering we were so happy with the final product and the benefits to SEO, we have continued to engage Sophia to write blogs for our website on a monthly basis. Sophia just gets us! The blogs that she writes meet the brief perfectly and rarely require any feedback! Sophia has continued to be quick to respond to our questions, she is always friendly and very accommodating to our deadlines. I couldn't recommend her more highly.

MY EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

TERTIARY-QUALIFIED

In addition to my experience as an Australian health writer, I have tertiary health qualifications. I graduated from the University of Sydney in 1990 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy). I’ve worked across a wide range of healthcare fields for more than 25 years, including musculoskeletal, sports, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, disability services and aged and community care. This has given me a significant understanding of the Australian healthcare scene, and substantial experience communicating health information with people form diverse backgrounds and levels of health literacy. It’s also given me an understanding of writing for a regulated sector with strict codes. I’m trained in Pilates instruction, and completed some subjects of a naturopathy degree (which was interrupted by the birth of my first daughter). After deciding to seriously pursue my life-long love of writing in 2015, I started an MA in Writing and Literature. I’ve completed several subjects, including a comprehensive editing unit (with high distinction). I’ve also completed training in magazine and newspaper writing, content writing, copywriting and SEO copywriting with the Australian Writers’ Centre, and the Recipe for SEO Success through The Clever Copywriting School. This means I know how to write for humans and feed the hungry Google beast!

HIGHLY EXPERIENCED

During my physiotherapy career, I wrote hundreds of medical reports, patient summaries and treatment proposals. This was great training for writing accurate health content but didn’t satisfy my craving for writing engaging and compelling copy for health businesses and consumers. When I started writing as a career in 2015, it was natural for me to gravitate to health publications. I soon had health articles published in national and international publications, such as Wellbeing, Good Health, Nature and Health, Bicycling Australia, MNDFOOD and The Saturday Paper. As my freelance health writing business grew, I started creating more content for health and medical brands and businesses. My interest in the intersection between health and technology saw me writing about biotech, too. Now, I’m a full-time health and medical writer, which allows me to maintain my interest in the Australian health sector while helping businesses and brands tell their stories and engage with their clients.

SERVICE FOCUSED

Working as a physio was great training in customer service. It involves interviewing people to discover intimate details about their lives, active listening, and treating them with empathy and respect. Physios are experts at discovering what drives people and delivering complex health information in a way that’s digestible and inspires them to action. Physiotherapists learn to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and with varying levels of health literacy, including patients and their families, allied health colleagues, general practitioners,  specialist physicians and surgeons. This has been excellent training for a health writer. My clients say they appreciate my health knowledge, professionalism, reliability and efficiency. They also like that I’m approachable and easy to work with. Some of them have even become friends.

A BIT MORE ABOUT ME

Words have always been a huge part of my life. As a child, I devoured books faster than you can say ‘chocolate cake’ and spent hours pottering in our garden making up stories. At school, I excelled at English, but thought that an English/literature degree could only lead to a teaching career (eek!) I also wanted to help people, so physiotherapy seemed a good choice. I’ve had great times in my physio career. Helping people recover and make good health choices is extremely rewarding. I’ve met incredible people. An early experience treating a young man with a terrible facial cancer at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital taught me that life is precious. Treating one who lost both his legs after a drug overdose taught me that choices can have devastating consequences. My desire to help people make proactive choices for good health led to an interest in natural and complementary therapies. I undertook studies in natural medicine through Sydney’s Nature Care College and the Australian College of Natural Medicine in Queensland, including herbal medicine, vibrational medicine and iridology. However, the niggling feeling that I was meant to be a writer persisted. Writing medical reports, patient summaries and treatment proposals just wasn’t enough.

In 1999, my restlessness got the better of me. I left Sydney with a plan to scuba dive my way around the coast of Australia, funded by locum jobs. Six months later, I met the man of my dreams in Queensland, and the rest is, well, you know what. Shortly afterwards I had my first beautiful daughter, and a second one three years later. We moved from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast in 2008 and haven’t looked back. In late 2015, I decided to have an earnest crack at writing as a job. I took some courses through the Australian Writers’ Centre and started an MA in Writing and Literature through Deakin University. As I got more writing jobs, I reduced my physiotherapy work. My long and diverse health background and finely-tuned health communication skills were a natural fit for health and medical writing. I’m now writing full time and love every minute. It’s great to use my health background to craft accurate and compelling copy that helps health and medical businesses to help their clients. I also love researching and understand how crucial it is for health information to be accurate, current and evidence-based. If my background and experience sound like a good fit, I’d love to have a chat with you about how my words can help your business.
